Os equipamentos de Proteção Respiratória, conhecidos popularmente por respiradores ou por máscaras, são instrumentos de segurança do trabalho que evitam o contato das vias respiratórias com agentes contaminantes atmosféricos, prejudiciais para a saúde do trabalhador. Elas estão dentro do quadro de Equipamentos de Proteção Individual do trabalhador e, por isso, devem ser fornecidos pelo empregador a todos os funcionários, em quantidades e em condições suficientes para a realização de suas funções.
Os respiradores cobrem, no mínimo, o nariz e a boca, podendo também proteger todo o rosto. Eles podem ser compostos de filtros e de cartuchos, mantendo os contaminantes suspensos no ambiente de trabalho.
Um bom respirador depende muito da qualidade do filtro ou do cartucho, sendo importante também o uso adequado de cada tipo para atuar contra o agente contaminante específico. O seu uso deve ser monitorado, devendo sempre estar bem ajustado à face para proporcionar uma boa vedação. Caso o equipamento apresente falhas, frestas ou buracos, o seu usuário ficará vulnerável à entrada de contaminantes.
Após um tempo de uso, o respirador pode apresentar sinais que indicam que precisa ser substituído. É necessário estar atento para que o funcionário não fique exposto por falta de equipamento de proteção e coloque a sua saúde em risco.
A falta de fiscalização ou o uso incorreto acarreta em distúrbios e em doenças para os colaboradores, além de incorrer em danos à produtividade e no rendimento do trabalho. Atualmente existem três respiradores de proteção que são utilizáveis.

Respiradores Descartáveis
Os respiradores auto-filtrantes, também conhecidos como purificadores de ar, são semi-faciais e são indicados contra a inalação de agentes sólidos, de vapores e de gases. Eles são dotados de filtros que se adequam ao tipo de contaminante presente no local.
No caso das partículas sólidas, o filtro utilizado é mecânico. No caso dos agentes químicos, os filtros são feitos de carvão ativado.
Os respiradores cobrem o nariz e a boca e, para que tenham eficiência total na proteção respiratória, devem ser ajustados corretamente ao rosto. Esses respiradores são uma peça inteira, não havendo a possibilidade de reparo ou de troca de peças.
Máscaras
Mais recomendados para ambientes com alta concentração de agentes contaminantes. Geralmente, esse modelo é utilizado para trabalhos que envolvam muita poeira, fumos, névoas, vapores e gases nocivos. Por permitir uma vedação mais completa, promove mais proteção respiratória do que os modelos descartáveis. As máscaras possuem durabilidade maior e permitem que sejam trocadas algumas peças como cartuchos, pré filltros, filtros e tirantes.
Máscaras de ar comprimido e autônomas
Nos equipamentos de suprimento, o ar comprimido é levado do conjunto de cilindros ao respirador, a partir de uma traqueia plástica. No caso das máscaras autônomas, o ar comprimido é armazenado em um cilindro de alta pressão, proporcionando ao usuário uma maior mobilidade, durando de 30 a 60 minutos. Esses modelos são indicados para ambientes onde há déficit de oxigênio, não oferencedo proteção respiratória para partículas sólidas, para gases ou para vapores.
A manutenção dos respiradores deve ser feita sempre que necessário! A limpeza deve seguir as instruções do fabricante, geralmente com água corrente e detergente neutro. Caso seja possível desmontar o respirador, lave as suas peças separadamente.
Quando filtros e cartuchos estiverem saturados, devem ser trocados por outros. A parte interna do respirador deve ser preservada.
Quando não estiver em uso, deve ser guardado dentro de um saco plástico e de um recipiente apropriado, longe do sol e da umidade. Além dos aspectos físicos, caso o usuário sinta gosto ou cheiro utilizando o protetor, deve trocá-lo imediatamente.
